The Health Department in the Abyei Special Administrative Area (ASAA) on Monday, 18 March, 2024, received six boxes containing medicines for sexually transmitted diseases, provided by the African Christian Ecumenical Alliance (ACEA), a national organization. The organization’s coordinator, Rogina Ajak, said that the support aims at helping survivors of gender-based violence, noting that the assistance includes medicines to treat sexually transmitted diseases and cases of rape.
For her part, Head of the Department of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Hon. Aluel Achuil Kiir, said that protecting victims of violence is very important, indicating that the presence of treatments reduces the cover-up of crimes linked to gender-based violence such as rape.
Meanwhile, Head Health Department, Hon. Deng Arop Mading, thanked the organization for the grant, noting that it would greatly help the hospital as it lacks therapeutic medications for sexually transmitted diseases.
Hon. Arop explained that “Violence against women and girls has been occurring in the region, and the medicines we obtained will be used immediately, because victims of violence need treatment”.
“The Health Department and its partners will conduct an awareness campaign.” He added. It is worth noting that this is the first time for Abyei Civil Hospital to receive therapeutic medications for sexually transmitted diseases.
