Humanitarian organizations operating in the Abyei Special Administrative Area (ASAA) assessed returnees in Amiet who have come from Sudan.
Hold The Child’s Protection Officer spoke to Abyei FM on Tuesday 19th March 2024. Mr. Matiop Mawith said they aimed to know the needs of the returnees and their living conditions, revealing that agencies will file reports to concerned authorities to assist them.
He added that returnees have been facing a dire humanitarian situation since their arrival early this month, noting that they didn’t get any food assistance and are facing a shortage of clean drinking water and shelter. Mawith said the items only given to them were biscuits and food supplements for malnourished children.
Mr. Joseph Longar, a chief of the Aweil community in Amiet, said some returnees want to proceed to Northern Bahr EL Ghazal, Warrap, Western Bahr El Ghazal, and Unity States but don’t have money for transport. He said that the Amiet market receives returnees every day.
About 1900 South Sudanese refugees in Kordofan of Sudan most of whom are women and children have returned after fleeing the fighting between RSF and Sudan Armed Forces.
