The community police in Abyei Administrative Area arrested five suspects aged between 20 and 30 years in connection to raping of a young girl last weekend.
Community police director of Gender Desk, Atoj Dau told Abyei FM on Monday 25th March, that the family of the survivor reported the case to the station.
Atoj said the suspects are in the police custody waiting for trial, noting that the incident had a family dispute connection that led young men to rape the victim.
She confirmed that the survivor was undergoing treatment in the hospital.
“My message to the youth in the area is that they have a responsibility towards their sisters and that violence against girls and women constitutes the destruction of community traditions,”. Atoj stressed.
On his part, Abior chieftaincy Chief Ring Achuil Juoc expressed his worries for the increase in gender-based violence cases in the area noting that the war in the region contributed to negative behaviors which never existed in Ngok society.
Chief Achuil called on youth, women, civil society, elders, and government to work together to protect society from these behaviors and their effects.
It is worth mentioning that the African Christian Ecumenical Alliance (ACEA) recorded 8 rape cases between January and March 2024.
