The Health Department of the Abyei Special Administrative Area (ASAA), has advised citizens to avoid shaking hands while greeting to prevent the spread of Red Eye disease.
Emergency Health Officer in the Department of Health, Mr. Kon Adok in a statement to Abyei FM, Wednesday 10th July 2024, confirmed the spread of Red Eye Disease in Abyei, indicating that the main reason behind the spread of the disease is failure to adhere to preventive guidelines such as avoiding handshakes. Mr. Adok called on those who complained of symptoms of the disease to go to the hospital to receive the correct treatment prescription, and also advised the need to wash hands with soap and water to avoid infection.
The health official said that his administration is working to educate citizens about the disease in health centers and hospitals in Abyei.
Red Eye Disease, or Conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the thin, transparent tissues covering the white part of the eye, and is caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
The disease is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or through respiratory droplets resulting from coughing or sneezing. It can be prevented by washing hands with soap and avoiding scratching or touching the eyes.
Those infected are advised to stay at home and receive health care.
