The health department in the Abyei Special Administrative Area (ASAA), on Wednesday 17th July 2024, announced an outbreak of Hepatitis E in the area.
Head of the Health Department, Hon. Deng Arop Mading, said in a press conference that the disease was discovered in three areas namely: Abyei Jongyom, Amiet, and Kec (Daira North) area north of Abyei. Hon. Mading said it was his duty to inform citizens about the outbreak of the disease adding that the Health Department had recorded fourteen (14) cases of Hepatitis E in the last few days.
The government official stated that the Health Department and its partners have put in place many measures to raise awareness among citizens about the disease and methods of prevention, in addition to directing healthcare workers to investigate and respond to cases of infection.
For his part, the health official at Save the Children International, Mr. Anyar Kuot, explained that Hepatitis E is a disease transmitted through contaminated water and can be fatal. Kuot added that they would work with the Health Department in Abyei Area to ensure a rapid response, pointing out that the disease is prevented through vaccination.
