The Abyei Special Administrative Government has pledged to help those affected by the heavy rains and floods, indicating that it will aid includes medicines, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, and food supplies.
The Head of the Local Government and Law Enforcement Agencies of Abyei Special Administrative Area and Chairperson of the Disaster Management Committee, Hon. Abionweng Majith Diing, said that the committee is working with organizations to rescue citizens in the neighborhoods of Abyei Jongyom, Bany Chol Malual, Manyiel Rou, and other affected areas as quickly as possible.
Abionweng explained that the aid is ready, pointing out that the committee is carrying out a comprehensive survey in all four counties and the municipality of Abyei to determine the extent of the damage and then provide food and in-kind aid.
She appealed to the community, especially young people in the neighborhoods, to help citizens open the internal sewers to drain the water, noting that the responsibility lies with everyone.
Abionweng confirmed that the committee, organizations, and UNISFA are working to maintain the road linking Amiet and Abyei, and the Abyei – Aniet road.
During the week, residents in Abyei appealed to the government, humanitarian organizations, and the UNISFA to intervene to provide assistance and open sewers to drain rainwater and floods.
The heavy rainwater that fell over the past few days forced dozens of families in the Abyei and Agok towns to leave their homes in various residential neighborhoods.
