The Disaster Management Committee in Abyei Special Administrative Area (ASAA) confirmed that flood waters had receded in some places in Abyei town at the beginning of this week.
The Head Administrator for Local Government and Law Enforcement Agencies and Chairperson of the Disaster Management Committee spoke to (Abyei FM) on Wednesday 2nd October 2024.
Hon. Abionweng Majith Diing confirmed that flood waters have returned largely in some residential neighborhoods in Abyei town such as Abyein Thony, Gongbial, and Doup, in addition to areas near Abyei Primary School and Freedom Square.
Hon. Abionweng added that some villages south of the river were damaged by flood waters, causing damage to farms and threatening the agricultural season with failure in each of the villages of Mabil Anyeil, Minyang Anyeil, Gong Mabil, and Awal Diil.
She stated that the Disaster Management Committee, in cooperation with humanitarian organizations, will conduct the assessment to provide the necessary assistance to people affected in those villages.
Hon. Abionweng urged families to be careful and ensure that they live in high areas and not to leave children to defecate in the open or in places submerged in flood waters to avoid diseases associated with floods.
Meanwhile, citizen Kiir Chel Malek, who lives in the Gongbial neighborhood near the seasonal Nyamora River, said that the flood waters are receding at a large rate, and he expects the flood waters to recede to the depth of Nymora in the week if there is no rain this week.
