Merchants in Mulmul market in Abyei municipality, Abyei Special Administrative Area are calling for the reorganization of the marketplace.
Several businesspeople spoke to (Abyei FM) on Monday 4th November 2024.
Achol Deng a vegetable seller said that the current place is a residential area turned into a marketplace and that the piece of land wasn’t enough to harbor huge businesses.
Akon Akuei called for the enlargement of the market or relocation to the main market of Nyinkuac a suburb situated just north of the town.
“A market in a residential area increases the occurrence of road accidents and begs for cleanliness,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Chamber of Commerce said they are working with the authorities to reorganize the market.
“We want to make sure that nobody loses its business for any reason,”. Said Mr. Chol Deng Chol.
Mulmul is one of the smallest busy markets in Abyei town for its location in front of the UN mission’s headquarters and on road junction connecting north and south of the region.
Abyei town municipality’s attempts to relocate it into Nyinkuac were met with resistance from both traders and owners of the land.
