The Security Advisor in Abyei Administrative Area says the sounds heard on Monday were of land mines being exploded by demining team in Agany village located north west of Abyei town.
Kelek Kon says communication about the incidence is still going on. He urges the team to inform people prior to planned destruction of landmines or any other explosives. The sounds caused panic among residents in Abyei town as some of them likened it to an attack.
Abyei FM could not reach the demining group in United Nations for comments.
Last month, two rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) fired by unknown persons, landed and exploded in the church’s compound in a suburb of Abyei town, flaring fears among the locals.
