COVID-19: Dr. Riek recommends review of COVID-19 restrictions

The First Vice President of South Sudan, Dr.Riek Machar Teny has called upon the newly reconstituted COVID-19 task force to review restrictions.

Machar, the chairman of the dissolved COVID-19 task force in his final report, recommended mandatory wearing of face masks.
He says their team faced challenges in enforcing restrictions because the public did not cooperate. Machar advises that sudden death from unknown disease should undergo Coronavirus test to control its transmission. He also says burial of COVID-19 victims should be done by trained medical workers.

Restructuring of public transport to encourage social distancing payment of incentives to medical workers, are among the recommendations he made.

Last week, Machar and his wife, Angelina Teny, the Defense and Veteran Affairs Minister tested positive for Coronavirus. Other senior government officials also got infected with the virus. They are in self-isolation in their residence.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Sudan have exceeded 340 with 6 deaths.
