South Sudan Vice President, Hussein Abdelbaggi among several others tests positive for COVID-19

The Vice President of South Sudan for Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbaggi is infected by COVID-19. Abdelbaggi announced it on a national television on Wednesday. He is among 188 people who tested positive for the virus on Wednesday bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 994 including 10 deaths and 6 recoveries.

Family members told Sudan Tribune that he has isolated himself in his residence where he will also be doing his official work. He also stepped down from the position of Chairman of the National Task Force on COVID-19 and appointed someone else to run it. Abdun Agaw Jok, the Secretary General of South Sudan Government is now the new leader of the task force.

Abdelbaggi is the second vice president and the fourth senior government official to disclose that he has contracted COVID-19. Dr. Riek Machar, his wife Angelina Teny and Information Minister, Michael Makuei are now in self-quarantine after they tested positive for COVID-19.
