Abyei women urged to leave foreign dance for their own

Shima Deng-Leader of Abyei Women Union

The chairperson of Abyei Women Union has urged women to stop dancing ‘wande’ dance. Wande as known locally, is a type of dance in which you bend forward and shake your hips as you move backward.

Shima Deng, Abyei women leader, sees this dance as foreign and wants it to be dropped for a local one.  She urges women to uphold Ngok Dinka cultures including traditional dance.

Recognizing that the dance is not part of Ngok Dinka culture, some women support Deng saying it should be baned.

‘Wande’ is a very common dance during women’s ceremonies in Abyei especially coffee party.
