South Sudan Opposition Alliance rejects states reallocation

South Sudan Vice President-Hussein Abdelbaggi

The leadership of South Sudan Opposition Alliance has rejected the reallocation of states. In a statement dated June 18th, the Alliance says the meeting in which the decision was taken did not include SSOA vice president, Hussein Abdelbaggi.

Abdelbaggi is currently in Aweil in Northern Bahr El Ghazal for funeral rite of his late father.

“The leadership of SSOA is dismayed by the statement released by the minister of Presidential Affairs yesterday 17th June 2020 which reallocated the states to the parties to the agreement. Because of that, the leadership of SSOA still stands by the resolution of the presidency dated 07th May 2020 that allocated Upper Nile to SSOA ” Reads the statement in part.

On Wednesday afternoon, South Sudan Minister of Presidential Affairs Nhial Deng Nhial, announced that parties to the Revitalized Peace Agreement in South Sudan have finally agreed on the allocation of states.

“Matters pertaining to the composition of the executive and the legislative branches of the [state] governments shall be discussed and agreed to at the later date,” Nhial Deng Nhial told the media.

The deal gives SPLM, the ruling party six states namely: Warrap, Lakes, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Eastern Equatoria, Central Equatoria, and Unity.

SPLA-IO will appoint governors of Western Equatoria, Western Bahr el Ghazal and Upper Nile. And SSOA has taken Jonglei.

The consensus came after months of political deadlock. Last week Troika called on opposition and government to establish state governments.  They attributed violence in the states to the absence of state government.

The Presidency allocated states in May this year but, the decision was refuted by leadership of SPLM-IO and other political parties to peace accord.

Two weeks ago, a senior member of SPLM-IO, resigned from the position of Deputy Minister of Interior. Mabior Garang Mabior cited lack of political will from the president to implement the revitalized peace. Insecurity was among the reasons for his resignation.

The formation of the transitional government of national unity started with the appointment of five deputy vice presidents in February.

With the appointment of the governors which yet to be done, the implementation of revitalized peace agreement will almost be complete.
