Abyei Administrative Area has set Friday as agriculture day starting from 26th June to 14th August this year. The decision made on Wednesday means that government workers will not be working on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Mading Anyang Kuol, Secretary General of Abyei Administrative Area urged civil servants to use this day for farming. During cultivation season, public offices in Abyei operate for a half day or close on every Friday, so that employees have three days to work on their farms.
Last year, there were low harvest due to flood resulting from heavy rains. To increase food production this year, the Administration of Agriculture, Animal Resources, Forestry and Fisheries in Abyei launched its first ever crop plantation in the area. Sorghum is the main food crop being grown on these farmlands.
