A cleaning campaign is being conducted in Abyei town since last week. The Executive Director of Abyei Municipality, Dut Piok Amuor says the exercise is part of fighting malaria. He says they have instructed residents to clean their houses and feeder roads. Grass and stagnant water provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes-insects which transmit malaria.
According to Piok, cleaning of public places including opening of drainage channels and health facilities, is yet to be done. He stated that he will meet other groups in the town to fix a date.
Health official warned of increasing cases of malaria.
The acting Head of Health Administration in Abyei Administrative Area, Nyanwut Miyen Kuol says 20 to 30 cases on average are being treated daily. She confirmed the availability of anti-malarial drugs in health facilities.
