Investigation team to gather the facts about the killing of police general in Sherikat residential area in Juba on Sunday has been launched. South Sudan National Police Spokesperson, Major General Daniel Justin told Abyei FM on Tuesday.
“No other suspect arrested. But we launched an investigation such that we get exactly the motive behind the killing,” the spokesperson said.
Asked about fear that gripped the residents of the area following the shooting Daniel says: “The situation is calm because our forces were there on the ground. No any security threat or anything.”
He says retired major General Bior Ajoh Bior was shot and killed while playing cards by South Sudan People’s Defense Force soldier who died of injuries later while being rushed to the hospital.
According to the police, the soldier was beaten by angry mob after shooting the general dead. South Sudan’s army Spokesman, Major General Lul Ruai Koang on Monday said the soldier was from Air Defense Unit of the SSPDF.
Though the reason behind the murder is unknown, some people think that it is politically motivated. This is not the first fatal shooting in Sherikat neighborhood.
In June, similar incident carried out by an SSPDF Officer, Lual Marine, a relative of President Salva Kiir left seven people-mainly civilians dead. Lual succumbed to injuries from beating a few hours later.
The killing spurred protests in Sherikat and Bor town with participants calling for quick justice to the victims.
President Kiir, on the same day issued a statement, condemning the shooting and formed a committee chaired by the minister of Justice, Madol Arol Kachuol. The president directed the body to “dig deeper” into incident.
The committee recently submitted its findings which are still concealed, to the president.
