Council of churches in Abyei Administrative Area met in Agok on Thursday. Father Paul Okech of the Catholic Church said they discussed ways to continue church activities during COVID-19 pandemic in line with health guidelines.
Seven representatives from all denominations in Abyei attended the meeting. The church leaders also talked about how to teach believers ways to protect themselves from the virus.
Churches among other public places were closed in March over coronavirus fears. The virus is passed from one person to another through droplets from mouth or nose of an infected person.
Abyei Administrative Area has 52 confirmed cases of the pandemic including 2 deaths. Social distancing, wearing face mask and frequent hand washing are recommended ways to prevent it.
On Tuesday, some believers called for reopening of their worship houses. Other churches have defiantly resume Sunday sermons with huge attendance. Abyei High-level committee on COVID-19 questioned their action. The body said it is waiting for order allowing churches to reopen, from South Sudan’s government.
