The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei UNISFA) has promised to distribute 500 solar powered radio sets to rural women in Abyei. The aim is to enable the beneficiaries to get messages of gender-based violence so that they will be able to make an informed decision.
The pledge was announced by UNISFA’s spokesperson on Wednesday during the official launching of Abyei FM in Agok town. Dr. Daniel Adekera says that women are agents of modernization and of change in the community.
“We believe women are the agents of modernization; they are agents of coordination. Their socializing initiative will help us go a longer way in reaching out especially gender-based violence messages.”
The top UN official says that the radio sets have already been purchased awaiting distribution on a date to be announced once arrangements are complete. He made the pledge as the world mark the end of the 16 days of activism exercise that advocates for an end to violence against women.
