
The office of Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Abyei says the verification of Internally Displaced Persons as a result of last year’s attack on Kolom village in Abyei Administrative Area has concluded.
739 households were verified but 30 – 40 households were confirmed to be missing. The two days exercise which begun on Wednesday aimed at preparing ground for food assistance to the IDPS.
RRC’s Program Manager says the assistance is expected after submission of a final report to the partners.
Mr. Deng Luaar said the initiative is part of the government plan to assist the IDPs to rebuild their lives in Kolom area. The verification carried out by WFP, RRC and Abyei Community Action for development organization – ACAD.
In January last year, armed men said to be from Misseriya attacked Kolom village north West of Abyei town, killing more than 30 civilians, injuring more than 20 others and displacing all the residents. Houses were torched.
The incident led to displacement of hundreds of families from Kolom and its neighboring villages (Noong, Dokura and Amiet) to Abyei town for safety.
