
The long-awaited Abyei Football Association elections were held with Alor Awet chosen as the chairperson.
Mr. Awet, the Manager of Salaama group of companies was unopposed after his predecessor, Chol Changath Chol withdrew from the race at the last minutes to the polls without giving a clear reason, giving Alor an easy win with 35 votes.
The polls held in Abyei town on Friday brought in Agok Mayol as the Deputy Chairperson after securing 32 votes, Deng Adook, Secretary General after winning 23 votes and Ajing Deng as the Treasurer.
An observer from South Sudan Football Association, Thiong John, says the elections were conducted in an “excellent atmosphere and high spirit.”
The newly elected chairperson, Alor Awet says his priority is to revive football and bring unity among sportsmen in the area.
Alor through is business has been supporting football activities in the area since last year. Earlier last month, his company, Salaama alongside other companies including Achai Wiir donated a bus to Abyei Football Association – a handout that might have paved his way to winning elections.
This is the second election since this football body was formed in 2016. The polls were to take place in June last year but were delayed because of Covid-19 pandemic.
