Agok traffic police to scale up road usage awareness to curb road accidents

Traffic Police officers stand in Aniet market, Abyei Administrative Area

The deputy director of traffic police in Agok in Abyei Administrative Area has promised to intensify monitoring road usage to reduce accidents.

This is a response to public call for traffic road usage awareness in the area made on Saturday.
Jel Aguek Bagat agreed with the public, but he said their operation is hindered by a lack of transport means to assess road regularly.

“For sure civilians have right to say because traffic is the only department feared by drivers. But I will talk to them and warn them against over speeding…. because over speeding can claim your life. We have some challenges facing us in doing patrol. So, I want to tell citizens that security is a collective responsibility,”

Last week, five people including a woman and a child were injured in an accident involving two vehicles on the road between Amiet and Abyei Town. The incident caused anger among people with some describing it as a result of reckless driving.

The police officer says they will also be conveying instructions about road usage and safety to the public on the radio.

Police in Abyei Town had attributed that incident to over speeding and dust which reduced visibility on the road. However, drivers said they drive in higher gear on this road due to fear of insecurity.
