One person killed in road ambush in Abyei

At least one civilian was killed, and four others were injured in a road ambush in Abyei Administrative Area on Saturday.

The person who died was the driver of the vehicle that was attacked, official says.

Security Adviser in Abyei Abyei Administrative Area, Kelek Kon Lual says a vehicle carrying 6 people fell in an ambush laid by unknown gunmen in Nyok lith area between Abyei town and Dokura.

“Around 9 o’clock in the morning, A vehicle carry 6 people moving to Amiet market was attacked by unknown gunmen. I think it was moving slowly behind the rest of vehicles. In the vehicle two women, and one young lady, and one man were injured, and the turn boy was not injured,” Kon says.

“I appealed, to our citizens who used to go to market to be moving in groups or group of 4 to 5 vehicles,” he added.

Kon says the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei – UNISFA has arrested 6 people in connection to this incident.

The Paramount Chief of Ngok Dinka Bulabek Deng Kuol has appealed additional UN peace keeping soldiers along this road to deter attack on travelers. He assured that the incident will not affect peaceful coexistence between Ngok Dinka and its neighbor, Misseriya tribe of the Sudan.“

“We, the community, we do not say that the peace will stop because of the accident. The two party shall continue peace talks. The security problem occurs everywhere. I believe that there is opportunity to continue peace talks with Misseriya,” Deng says.

Such attacks have repeatedly occurred on Amiet-Abyei town road. Last year, similar incident resulted in the injury of three people.
