Abyei Administrative Area Security Advisor Kelek Kon Lual has confirmed that UNISFA troops have arrested three men believed to be from Misseriya for hijacking a passenger vehicle.

The incident occurred on Abyei Town-Amiet road on Sunday. So far, UNISFA not issue a statement to confirm or deny it.

A Land Cruiser hardtop driver who spoke to Abyei FM on Monday said that 8 armed men stopped his vehicle with five passengers on board about one kilo meter from Amiet market.

Juac Bol Kur said the assailants robbed them more than 200,000 SSP and $ 500. Only one woman sustained minor injuries.

“They threatened me with a gun and took me behind. Some of them opened the door and ordered the passengers to alight. Two children- a girl and a baby who delayed to move out were taken with the vehicle. Ethiopian troops were close to us and did nothing except after the arrival of their vehicle mounted with a machine gun. I drove the vehicle after the UN troops exchanged fire with them. Two bullets hit the glass and door next to me.”

Security advisor urged drivers to seek UN escorts from Abyei Town to Amiet market and vice-versa. Killing, robbery and vehicle hijack incidents are common in Abyei Box.

In March, 2021, armed men suspected to be from  Misseriya tribe gunned down the driver of a commercial vehicle travelling from Abyei Town to Amiet. Four other people were injured in the same incident. Following the attack, eight suspects were arrested but were set free a few days later by UNISFA and handed over to Joint Military Observers’ Committee from Sudan. Whether or not the suspects were tried by the Sudanese government remains unclear.
