Civil society organizations including Abyei Youth Union organized a peaceful demonstration against deployment of South Sudan People’s Defense Forces inside Abyei box.

Dozens of women, chiefs and youth participated in the demonstration held in Abyei Town on Thursday.

In a statement obtained by Abyei FM, the groups called for the withdrawal of forces stationed south of the Kiir River in the Mijak-kol area.

Mijak-kol is located a few kilometers South of Agok where fighting took place in February.

The statement accused the forces present in Mijak-kol of participating in the attack on Agok and looting of property.

They have requested the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei to establish a bases South of the Kiir River.

The statement also called for the withdrawal of Sudanese militias located in “Diffra” locally known as “Keec.”

The memo was received presented to UN mission information office in Abyei Administrative Area.

The mission promised to look into the demands, and requested for a time to respond to their demands.

The communal clashes which broke in Agok in February left more than twenty people dead and caused massive displacement of civilians.

Despite deployment of SSPDF following the incident, killing and looting continued in some parts of Abyei.
