
Women in Abyei Administrative Area have renewed calls for affirmative action in the highest political positions in the region.
This was revealed during the “Umbrella program” on Friday 19th May 2023.
A member of the local legislative council demanded four senior seats in yet to be formed government.
Hon. Nyajeng Minyiel Rou said women are vying for positions such as deputy chief administrator, ministry of finance, ministry of agriculture, and Abyei Town Mayor.
This is the fourth time women have called for their genuine consideration in such senior positions.
Abyei has more than 40 senior government positions out of which only 6 are occupied by women.
A female lawyer and activist decried dishonoring of 35% women quota as per the country’s constitution.
Abionweng Majith encouraged women to actively participate in political parties to prepare themselves for the 2024 general elections.
The Chief Administrator Dr. Chol Deng Alak appointed three males to the positions of deputy chief administrator, secretary general, and minister of peace and reconciliation.
Callers on the program said that South Sudan and Abyei need different thinking about great potential in women.
