Abyei Civil Society on Friday morning organized a peaceful demonstration in Abyei town to condemn the attempt to assassinate government officials in the Agok area recently.
In a press statement, the civil society organizations called on the national government to withdraw the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) present in the Agok area out of the Abyei Box.
The statement said that army forces targeted government officials and were involved in an attempt to assassinate them.
Civil society organizations also called on the African Union, the United Nations, the Troika countries, and the international community to pressure the government of South Sudan to adhere to the Status Of Force Agreement known as the “SOFA” agreement.
Civil society organizations also called on the international community to stop what they called genocide in Abyei, forced displacement, and human rights violations by Sudan and South Sudan.
The statement stressed the need to conduct an immediate and transparent investigation into the attempted assassination of the head of the department of Local Government and Rule of Law and the Commissioner of Rumamer County, as well as the investigation into the assassination of the former Deputy Chief Administrator and the former head of the Infrastructure and Public Utilities Department.
